STARBASE Indiana-South Bend opened during a ceremony with students from Greene Intermediate Center and VIPs on Thursday, March 31, 2016. This location is located at the newly renovated National Guard Armory Facility. Founded in 1636 as a citizen force organized to protect families and towns from hostile attacks, today’s National Guard Soldiers hold civilian jobs or attend college while maintaining their military training part time, always ready to defend the American way of life in the event of an emergency.

Sarah "Buttercup"  Seales

Sarah Seales moved to Mishawaka from Phoenix, Arizona when she was 9 years old and is still adjusting to the cold and snow in Indiana. She graduated from Penn High School and earned her degree in Elementary Education with Reading Recovery experience from Indiana University of South Bend. She worked at Healthworks! Kids’ Museum for eight years and spent the past two years at the University of Notre Dame working on academic research projects. She is married to her awesome husband and was blessed with 4-year-old boy/girl twins, Reese and Ava, who like to keep her busy. Sarah loves all things Disney and planning family vacations to visit Mickey and Minnie. She completed the Sunburst half-marathon in 2011 and hopes to complete a Run Disney race someday. She is very excited STARBASE Indiana opened in South Bend and loves having fun with the students and sparking their interest in STEM!

Jackie "Blossom" Lubensky

Jackie Lubensky grew up in Midwest Indiana. She moved to South Bend in her junior year of high school, graduating from Penn High School. She grew up in a household that encouraged Mathematics and Science. Her father and brother are engineers. Having an aptitude for the arts, drawing and painting, she went off to college in Indianapolis. She graduated from Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis with a degree in Visual Communication and a Minor in Art History. She worked as a professional custom picture framer for fourteen years, traveling and teaching in the northern region of Illinois and Indiana. STARBASE is a perfect home for her, being surrounded by STEM interests and energetic children. She is looking forward to engaging her creative side with some STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) activities. She has a brand new niece she plans on spoiling rotten. Her two passions are gourmet cooking and mid-century design, and her latest adventure— mastering the ukulele.

Ryan “Bandit” Schwab

Ryan Schwab was born and raised in a small town called Ironton, Ohio. He has taught fourth and fifth graders in Florida and Indiana. He says he has been interested in STEM his entire life, especially the technology and engineering branches. Math is probably his strongest STEM subject, though, thanks to his parents’ insistence on memorizing times tables at a young age. Ryan enjoys getting outside to play soccer, basketball, or baseball; or to go for a run or a hike. Video games are a joy for him, but he saves such fun for when it’s raining outside. Ryan is an avid movie buff, being a fan of anything directed by Chris Nolan- especially his Batman films. He is proud to say that he probably knows far too much about Harry Potter after reading the series so many times. Ryan is extremely excited to be engaged to his amazing fiancé, Aileen, who puts up with his relentless word puns. Ryan comes to STARBASE as “Bandit,” and is pumped to share his spark for STEM education.
