STARBASE Indiana-South Bend opened during a ceremony with students from Greene Intermediate Center and VIPs on Thursday, March 31, 2016. This location is located at the newly renovated National Guard Armory Facility. Founded in 1636 as a citizen force organized to protect families and towns from hostile attacks, today’s National Guard Soldiers hold civilian jobs or attend college while maintaining their military training part time, always ready to defend the American way of life in the event of an emergency.

STARBASE Indiana - South Bend

Academy Director: Matt “BOLT” Bellina

Matt Bellina was raised in South Bend attending McKinley and Edison School in the South Bend Community School Corporation. He received a BS in Education and MA in Corporate Wellness from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. His STEM influences include the staff at STARBASE, family members and popular names such as Bill Nye the Science Guy and Steve Spangler. “I was lucky to have a father that allowed me to make safe-mistakes and creatively build in his laboratory.” As the youngest of 5 boys Matt learned quickly how to navigate group work. “It is important to know what you are good at, focus on that, and get out of the way of the others in the group (my brothers)”. In his free time Matt enjoys running, coaching youth soccer and volunteering in the community. As the Academy Director, I look forward to welcoming you to STARBASE Indiana, located in South Bend.

Teacher: Sarah “Buttercup” Seales

Sarah Seales moved to Mishawaka from Phoenix, Arizona when she was 9 years old and is still adjusting to the cold and snow in Indiana. She graduated from Penn High School and earned her degree in Elementary Education with Reading Recovery experience from Indiana University of South Bend. She worked at Healthworks! Kids’ Museum for eight years and spent the past two years at the University of Notre Dame working on academic research projects.  Sarah loves all things Disney and planning family vacations to visit Mickey and Minnie. She completed the Sunburst half-marathon in 2011 and hopes to complete a Run Disney race someday. She is very excited STARBASE Indiana opened in South Bend and loves having fun with the students and sparking their interest in STEM!

Teacher / 2.0 Site Coordinator: Ryan “Bandit” Schwab

Ryan Schwab was born and raised in a small town called Ironton, Ohio. He has taught fourth and fifth graders in Florida and Indiana. He says he has been interested in STEM his entire life, especially the technology and engineering branches. Math is probably his strongest STEM subject, though, thanks to his parents’ insistence on memorizing times tables at a young age. Ryan enjoys getting outside to play soccer, basketball, or baseball; or to go for a run or a hike. He has coached 8th Grade and High School Junior Varsity basketball teams. Video games are a joy for him, but he saves such fun for when it’s raining outside. Ryan is an avid movie buff, being a fan of anything directed by Chris Nolan- especially his Batman films. He is proud to say that he probably knows far too much about Harry Potter after reading the series so many times. Ryan is extremely excited to be married to his amazing wife, Aileen, who puts up with his relentless word puns. Ryan comes to STARBASE as “Bandit,” and is pumped to share his spark for STEM education.

Office Manager: Chloe “Breeze” Hensley

Chloe Hensley was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, and graduated from Riley High School. She attended Manchester University, where she received a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies and a minor in Biology. While attending Manchester, she studied abroad in Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and the Bahamas, and was a member of the softball team. Shortly after completing her degree, she worked in Colorado at an Outdoor School as an Environmental Educator. Since returning to South Bend, she has been a volunteer coach for the Riley Softball team. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, playing sports, and eating ice cream. Chloe is thrilled to be promoting STEM initiatives to students in her hometown!
